What to expect at your Liver Health Scan FibroScan® appointment
FibroScan® only takes 15-20 minutes to perform. The procedure is non-invasive and not painful. There are no side-effects or recovery time from the procedure.
Following your FibroScan® patients will be provided with their results and your practitioner will discuss a treatment plan if required.
You do not require a referral from a General Practitioner or other doctor for your FibroScan®, however this assists with providing our practitioners with your medical history. If you do not have a referral you may incur higher fees - please speak to our reception team or see below for further information on fees.
Preparing for your appointment
When you book your appointment we will provide you with details on where you need to go, costs and fasting. Please arrive 10 mins early for your appointment to check in and complete any relevant paperwork. You are welcome to bring a support person with you to your appointment.
You will need to fast for 2 hours prior to your appointment. You may take prescription medication as normal with small sips of water.

During your appointment
The FibroScan® will be performed by a qualified practitioner, who will explain the procedure and answer any questions you may have.
The procedure is non-invasive and not painful. You will lie on your back with your right arm raised will need to expose your abdomen (wearing a loose top is recommended). Gel will be applied to the skin. The scanner is a small hand-held sensor which is pressed to the skin and which passes vibrations through to the liver. You may feel a slight click but there is no pain. After approximately 10 pulses the scan will calculate your liver stiffness.
After your appointment you can drive, return to work and carry out normal activities. You can eat and drink as normal following the procedure.
At your appointment you will be also be weighed and asked details such as age and height to calculate your body mass index (BMI).
Results
Following your scan you will be given a detailed report of the results. The results will include the median stiffness of your liver, measure of fatty changes in the liver, your BMI, body fat percentage, muscle mass, bone mass, metabolic age and visceral fat rating. All of these factors will be considered in your diagnosis, and in formulating a treatment plan. A copy of your results will be provided to your referring doctor, GP and yourself.
Risks/Contraindications of the procedure
There are no side effects of the procedure. FibroScan® results may be less accurate if you have a waist measurement over 100cm. You should let the Practitioner know if you have a pacemaker.
Fees & Payments
We are a private billing practice and fees apply to Liver Health Scan. Payment is required on the day of your appointment or prior.
Fees effective 1/1/2025:
Fibroscan: $200 (no Medicare rebate applicable)
Practitioner: Bulk billed (If you do not hold a Medicare card, further fees $50.05-$148.85 will apply - please contact us for further information)
Cancellation Policy
You will be sent an SMS to confirm your appointment a few days prior. Please reply to this SMS to confirm you will be attending or contact us to reschedule. Failure to reply to the SMS may result in cancellation of your appointment. Cancellations within 24 hours or failure to attend your appointment may result in a cancellation fee being charged, or require pre-payment of future appointments.
Running on time
We endeavour to run on time; however circumstances occasionally mean that your appointment may be delayed. We will try to inform you in advance if we are not running to time.
